Next Stop: Recycle Town
According to Rumpkes Recycling Division,
the sorting process for recycled materials goes like this:
Recycled products are collected at
the curb or drop-off box and transported to a recycling
center.
The truck loaded with materials is weighed and then directed
to the interior of the Material Recovery
Facility (MRF).
Recyclable materials are dumped
onto a tipping floor.
Then these materials are placed on a conveyor
belt that carries them through a sorting station. Employees
sort through the materials on
the moving belt and remove unacceptable materials from the stream.
The recycled items then travel through a series of automated
and manual sorting stations which
separate materials into their specific categories. A magnet
is used to remove steel cans and an eddy current removes the aluminum
cans. Glass and plastic containers are sorted by hand.
The separated materials are baled
or contained and then shipped
to facilities to be recycled into new products.
