Help at Home

To inspire your family and neighbors to recycle, you might have to turn into a Garbage Sleuth.

Without getting too messy, check out what your family and neighbors are throwing away. Do you see lots of aluminum cans, last week’s newspapers, or glass bottles filling their garbage cans?

As a Garbage Sleuth, then it’s your job to point out what they are throwing in the garbage that could easily go into the recycling bin.

Give them a Hand:
If they haven’t started recycling already, tell them how to get a free bin from the City of Wyoming (Call 821-7600)

Then set up an in-house sorting system using another empty garbage can or stacking shelves for sorting different items. Then help them lug their bin to the curb on garbage day.

Point out how much they are saving from going to the landfill each week.

Activity:

•Walk around your house and see how many items you can pick out that you and your family can send to the recycling bin rather than the landfill.

•Keep this list on the refrigerator or near your recycling bin so that you remember what to save and what to toss.

See if you can double the amount of recyclable material you put at the curb. Then notice if your garbage can has more empty space it in because of all of the items you’re saving from the landfill.
